Who We Are

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has established the Center for Naval Research & Education (CNRE) at the University of Michigan (CNRE in the News). CNRE will address fundamental science and technology challenges within the context of naval applications while training future generations. The core of the CNRE is a group of talented, energetic, multi-disciplinary postdoctoral researchers, senior graduate students, and undergraduate research trainees who create our vibrant and intellectually stimulating environment of excellence. We work on exciting problems in diverse areas such as bio-fluid interactions, wave energy, advanced materials, electromagnetics, complex hydrodynamics and hydroacoustics, data assimilation and multi-disciplinary optimization.

Our Students Say

"The most important skill I learned was how to plan and execute a research project. While my project was part of a larger investigation, I felt that having my own tasks (investigating the unconfined domain) really helped me learn how to manage and navigate research. Specifically, what to do when things go wrong, how to decide what variables you want to investigate, and how to present your results. In regards to the last point, Learning how to present where things went wrong not as a mistake but rather, as a discovery was a very valuable skill to me."
